Facts:
Louis XIV was born in St. Germain-en-Laye on September 5, 1638. His father died on May 14, 1638. He did not fully take over until the year 1651, when he turned 13 and became old enough to rule without help of Cardinal Mazarin. Mazarin had coached the king in ruling, and said that Louis questioned him often. When Louis took over power of the government, in 1661, he weakened the power of the nobles by completely excluding them from his cousin; by doing so, he gained power for the government. Louis XIV never doubted himself, therefore making him able to maintain a powerful kingdom. During his reign of 72 years the kingdom changed dramatically from medieval ways to more modern ways of that time period. He did what many kings tried to do for decades in just 54 years.
Louis never had much of an academic education, although he later picked up some Latin and modern languages. He was a handsome and althletic young man who had mastered fencing, dancing, and horseback riding. Louis believed that God gave kings their power and expected that the kings with the power rule personally and with great authority. On September 1, 1715, Louis died four days before his 77th birthday because of the disease gangrene. Almost everyone in France wanted to be like king Louis because he was the absolute power in France. They would try to imitate the clothes he wore, how he acted and where he went. Even other countries and kingdoms tried to be like Louis and his country by copying his style and architechure. Many kings have tried to match his monarchy but have failed to reach his amazing standards.
